American Express, the multinational corporation specialized in payment card services, has filed seven trademark applications for its logos and “AMERICAN EXPRESS,” “AMEX,” “CENTURION,” “SHOP SMAL”, and “MEMBERSHIP REWARDS,” expressing its intention to enter the metaverse and embrace of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The trademark applications state that the company wants to provide NFTs, as well as virtual currency and banking services in the metaverse and other virtual worlds.

In addition, the trademark application mentions “Downloadable computer software for creating, distributing, and managing physical and virtual payment cards and card transactions,” and “Downloadable computer e-commerce software to allow users to perform electronic business transactions in the metaverse and other virtual worlds.”

Earlier today, trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis shared the news via Twitter.

“Clearly, American Express sees the potential of the Metaverse and is preparing its trademarks and brand for the virtual economy that will dominate it,” Mr. Kondoudis opined. “Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these applications is that they appear to signal the start of a new trend of Metaverse trademark filings from the financial services sector.”
