Nexon, a Japanese-South Korean video game publisher, has announced a collaboration with Polygon to power the blockchain ecosystem of its MapleStory Universe.

MapleStory Universe is a new Web3 project based on one of Nexon’s most popular titles, MapleStory — a free-to-play, multiplayer online role-playing game that has over 180 million registered members.

Nexon’s collaboration with Polygon will allow the company to introduce the community to a dedicated blockchain space where users can earn and collect NFTs through gameplay and unlock many utilities.

“We are looking forward to expanding the NFT ecosystem envisioned by MapleStory Universe by building on Polygon, the top protocol for Web3 gaming,” said Sun-young Hwang, MapleStory Universe group leader.

Nexon’s collaboration with Polygon comes shortly after the company released a post explaining its reasons for adopting blockchain technology — emphasizing the importance of providing “trust that it will continue to provide utility” and “scalability which won’t disappear easily” — and naming MapleStory as the best candidate to introduce these new features.

Nexon joins the list of other successful gaming projects built on the Polygon network — including Ubisoft, Atari, Animoca, Decentraland, and The Sandbox. Last month, Square Enix also announced a collaboration with Polygon for Symbiogenesis, its upcoming Web3 gaming project.

Furthermore, numerous NFT projects have announced their expansion to Polygon, including NFT platform Rarible, Fractal, the gaming NFT marketplace co-founded by Twitch’s Justin Kan, and NFT marketplace Magic Eden.
