KEY POINTS

  • OpenSea introduces its “Get Based” initiative to spotlight emerging artists on the Base blockchain.
  • Affordable artworks, priced at $5 or less, to be unveiled weekly throughout the summer via OpenSea and Farcaster.
  • The campaign kicks off with the release of the “Based Summer” poster.

Non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace OpenSea has launched the “Get Based” initiative to highlight emerging creators’ artworks on the Base blockchain.

Throughout the summer, the initiative will feature works from up to 15 artists, with new pieces unveiled weekly on OpenSea’s website and through frames on the social media protocol Farcaster. The artworks will be priced at $5 or less, with some available for free.

To mark the launch of this campaign, OpenSea is releasing a commemorative poster that reimagines the one of “The Endless Summer” — a popular documentary by Bruce Brown. The documentary follows two California surfers traveling the world in search of the perfect wave.

Artist Carty Sewill, commissioned for the poster artwork, has reinterpreted the original 1966 poster — now in the public domain — and titled it “Based Summer” with the tagline “In search of the perfect meme.”

The “Get Based” campaign will kick off with the release of the “Based Summer” poster, available starting today, May 23, at 6 pm CEST.

This campaign coincides with the launch of Base’s second edition of its Onchain Summer program — a month-long global online hackathon. The hackathon invites builders, creators, brands, and artists to co-create, with Base and its partners offering over 600 ETH (equivalent to $2 million) in prizes, grants, and gas credits.

Launched in February 2023, Base is an Ethereum-based Layer 2 blockchain developed by Coinbase. Since its launch, it has supported several significant projects. In August 2023, Coca-Cola introduced the “Masterpiece” NFT collection on the Base blockchain, combining classic and contemporary art in eight exclusive digital collectibles.

Recently, MoonPay partnered with Coinbase‘s Ethereum L2 blockchain Base, enhancing accessibility for NFT purchases with faster transactions and improved security.
