Popeye to Enter the Metaverse and Turn into NFTs

Hearst Holdings has filed a trademark application for the "Popeye" name, indicating its plan to move it to the metaverse and the realm of NFTs.

Hearst Holdings, which controls over 360 companies, has submitted a trademark application for the “POPEYE” name and likeness, indicating its plan to move it to the metaverse and the realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

According to the application, which was submitted to the USPTO on July 22nd, the firm plans to provide:

  • Virtual goods, namely footwear, clothing, accessories, watches, toys, and more for use in online and virtual worlds;
  • Downloadable multimedia files containing artwork, text, audio and video relating to carton characters authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Michael Kondoudis, a trademark attorney, tweeted the news earlier today.

Companies are increasingly submitting metaverse and NFT-related trademark applications in an attempt to make classic cartoons known forever and innovate them, with the goal of appealing to new generations with this new revolutionary technology.
