American multinational music company Sony Music has submitted a trademark application for the Columbia Records logo, with aspirations to join the non-fungible token (NFT) space.

According to the application, which trademark attorney Michael Kondoudis shared on Twitter, the company intends to provide:

  • Artwork, text, audio and video recordings featuring live musical performances authenticated by NFTs;
  • Multimedia file containing audio relating to music authenticated by NFTs;
  • Online entertainment, namely, providing podcasts and non-downloadable sound and audiovisual recordings in the field of music;

This is not the first time Sony has taken a move toward new technologies. Last November, it collaborated with AMC to provide Spider-Man NFTs to the first 86,000 ticket buyers to mark the debut of the film “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Sony invested $1 billion in Epic Games in April, indicating its interest in the metaverse.

In June, Sony announced the introduction of its “Tiki Guy” NFT with a physical Sony Spatial Reality Display gadget on Theta Drop.

NFTs are transforming the music industry and events in general. They are giving fans a new method for remembering concerts and events, as well as accessing exclusive perks, all while feeling like a part of a community.
