British auction house Sotheby’s has introduced a new non-fungible token (NFT) auction, titled “R(Evolutionaries),” to commemorate a decade of blockchain art.

The featured collection, curated by MORROW collective, an NFT fine art curatorship dedicated to supporting galleries, artists, and collectors in the NFT space, pays tribute to leading figures who initiated the blockchain art movement in 2014.

“R(Evolutionaries)” showcases artworks spanning the entire decade, featuring the foundational works of influential artists from each year, as well as new pieces and significant events that have shaped the movement.

Among the contributors to this project are Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, a married couple based in New York known for creating collaborative art, Rhea Myers, a seasoned programmer with experience across all blockchain levels, and Nili Lerner, who introduced NILIcoins in 2014 to establish her “artcoins.”

The project was first unveiled at Art Dubai Digital 2024 and is also showcased in a dedicated metaverse art gallery. The auction is scheduled to open on Friday, March 15, and will run until March 21, 2024. The starting bids for the artworks have not yet been disclosed.

This auction follows Sotheby’s previous NFT-based sales, such as the “Natively Digital” Bitcoin NFT sale in January, which featured artworks from various artists and achieved over $1 million in sales. In December, the “BitcoinShrooms” NFT auction by Sotheby’s exceeded expectations, amassing $450,850, with individual NFTs selling 5-8 times higher than estimated prices.

Sotheby’s has experienced success in NFT sales since establishing its Web3 arm, Sotheby’s Metaverse. At the close of 2023, the auction house reported $35 million in digital art sales for the year, attributing its success to NFT triumphs and record-setting auctions.
