Geno Smith, the American football quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL), has submitted a trademark application for “THEY WROTE ME OFF I AINT WRITE BACK THOUGH,” signaling his intention to join the metaverse.

The quote refers to the words Smith shouted after spoiling Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson’s homecoming on Monday Night Football, Sept. 12, from Lumen Field in Seattle.

According to the trademark application, submitted to the USPTO on September 14, Smith plans to provide:

  • Retail store services featuring virtual goods, namely, footwear, clothing, headwear, eyewear, sports bags, sports equipment, toys, accessories, and more for use online;
  • Online retail store services featuring virtual goods for use in online virtual worlds.

The news was shared via Twitter by trademark attorney Josh Gerben.

Geno Smith is not the first professional athlete to express interest in entering the virtual world. The American football quarterback Tom Brady and football legend Jim Brown have also filed similar trademark applications to enter the metaverse and provide non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
